In October of 2008 classically trained artist Aliea Wallace began independently teaching drawing and painting techniques to artists of all ages, mostly at the elementary age. As her students were building a visual vocabulary to create and learning how to draw realistically, Aliea was inspired by the many marks and intuitive, mostly anonymous drawings left behind on the large paper place mats that are continuously on the tables of creation.

Both the beautifully colored chaos and automatic drawing process of her students on the mats, and the step-by-step guided artwork created during lessons continues to provide inspiration for many, referred to as simply “magical.”

5 Years is a celebration of both the artistic growth of Aliea and her students, and of the community, of both the world we observe and the internal world that continues to reveal itself in what we call art. It will feature a collection of student artwork, the collaborative mats over the course of five years, and new automatic drawings by Aliea.
