Featured Artist: Toya Alexander

Toya Alexander will be performing songs from the musical legacy of the late jazz singer, Phyllis Hyman along with her own originals. Toya performed her own original songs in the Bay Area for many years, formerly under the stage name Simply Toya. Toya portrayed the late jazz and soul singer Phyllis Hyman in several productions of “Celestial Celebration”, a musical stage play by James Brooks. Since then, Toya produced and performed several of her own musical tributes to Phyllis Hyman. In past events, Toya opened for Howard Hewitt, Freda Payne and Norman Connors and has been a featured vocalist for several Bay Area bands, public and private events. Toya is also an aspiring playwright and served a term as Entertainment Coordinator for the Bay Area Repertory Theater.

This event is an encore performance following the highly successful pre-Valentine’ concert, “A Musical Night of Old Fashion Love” also featuring The Lloyd Gregory Quintet and vocalist/ pianist, Rodney Bell. It was held, February 11, 2017, at Rhythmix Cultural Works in Alameda, Ca.

Host:

Actor / singer James Brooks will host the event James was the person responsible for Toya’s journey into the legacy and performance of Phyllis Hyman music and tributes.

Band:

The Lloyd Gregory Ensemble: A stellar group of highly professional Bay Area musicians, directed by well-known guitarist, Lloyd Gregory. The ensemble includes Pianist, Glen Pearson; Bassist, Ron Belcher; Percussionist, Leon Joyce; Saxophonist to be announced.

Complimentary Light buffet and wine bar included with concert.

The Artwork of Bay Area artist Karen Malpas will be on display in lobby.
