“Mark
Izu’s music is a great gift to the jazz tradition, to its
ongoing transformation and revitalization into energetic and
unpredictable new directions” -Downbeat Magazine
Izu's music
is an amalgam of ancient Asian traditions fired in jazz. Joyfully
he opens the Rhythmix World Music Series with the Mark Izu Quartet,
a brand new ensemble featuring premiere saxophonist Richard Howell,
koto extraordinaire Shoko Hikage, and the thunder drums of Janet Koike,
with special guest performance artist Brenda Wong Aoki.
Says Izu,
“People, according to Japanese mythology, were created to keep
the light on the earth. The Sun Goddess’s little brother teased
her so badly, she shut herself in a cave. All was darkness. So the
gods created people to tell stories dance, play music. The Sun Goddess
got curious and came back. That’s our role – to keep the
light on the earth. “
