Maurice Ramirez

Maurice Ramirez studied photojournalism at San Francisco State University and worked as a music editorial photographer in the late 90’s, corporate editorial, and then a decade on private events. More recently he’s focused on municipality and non-profit communities.

On September 9, 2020, the air was thick with toxic smoke from multiple wildfires and, coupled with unusual wind and pressure, enveloped the entire Bay Area with a sickly orange sky. It looked and smelled apocalyptic.

I’d been documenting happenings in Alameda since the beginning of the pandemic and this one day presented a visual reminder, even after months of complete societal pause and protests and even with the effects of local environmental disasters staring us in the face, that we’ll work in spite of climate change.

“My father was an aeronautics engineer at the Alameda Navy base and I was intrigued with the altimeters and horizon gauges on his desk, but was especially fascinated by his camera.”
