Brazil is a country that is rich in music and dance. Afro Brazilian Dance with Asatu will explore folkloric dances influenced by the rich African culture that still exists throughout the country. In this fun, energetic and welcoming class, we will focus on a mix of Carnival or street dances including Samba Reggae, Bloco Afro, Afoxe, Maracatu, and traditional and contemporary movements of the Orixas. Get ready to sweat and be culturally enriched.

Attire:

Feel free to wear comfortable dance or workout clothes, bare feet or dance shoes, and a bottle of water.

Please arrive early to allow time for warm-up.

Asatu is a seasoned performer, choreographer and founding member of Emesè: Messengers of the African Diaspora a collective of artists founded in 1998 with a mission to promote and present the rich cultural traditions of the African Diaspora. Her background in dance incorporates over 25 years of various genres including Ballet, West African, Congolese, Brazilian and Cuban. She has had the honor of studying and performing with a number of master artists in the Bay Area and abroad, in particular, her mentors Mestre Carlos Aceituno (founder of Fogo Na Roupa Grupo Carnavalesco Cultural) and Regina Califa, Jorge Alabe, Blanche Brown, Titos Sompa, Malonga Casquelourd, Jose Francisco Barroso, Juan De Dios Ramos, Linda Faye Johnson, Isaura Oliveira, and others. Asatu currently teaches Afro Cuban and Afro Brazilian dance in Oakland in addition to her new offering of Afro Brazilian Dance at Rhythmix in Alameda.
