Discover the richness of Afro-Caribbean rhythms as we explore select percussive elements of music from Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia and Puerto Rico.

Learn to play rhythms used in popular Latin dance and music forms including salsa, cumbia, gaita and plena, with particular attention to the use of claves, maracas, guiro, tambora and guicharo.

*You do not need to have these instruments to learn their rhythms or participate, and no prior music knowledge or experience is necessary.

Limit: 6 participants (please inquire if you are interested in private online lessons)

Ages: 12 – 112

English and Spanish speakers welcome! Instruction language will be adapted based on participants’ needs. Music vocabulary is in Spanish.

WEEK 1 – March 31st: Cumbia (tambora, maracas)

WEEK 2 – April 7th: Gaita (tambora / 6/8 Rhythm)

WEEK 3 – April 14th: Plena (guicharo)

This class will be taught through Zoom. Instructor will email a link to join the class upon registration.

To get the best experience from this online class, you will need:

A computer or a mobile device (e.g. iPad/tablet or iPhone/SmartPhone) with built-in or external camera. An iPad or iPhone will produce a better quality image than a laptop.

Audio speakers along with microphone (you can use the built-in mic and speakers on your device, however, a headset may be preferable depending on the type of class).

A good internet connection.
