Jan and Emilie Watten Bio

Jan Watten has been photographing people, places and things since she was in high school. Her first camera was her grandfather’s Yashicaflex. As soon as she developed her first roll of film she fell in love with photography. She has been capturing images ever since.

Watten hails from Oakland, California and has a BFA in Photography from California College of Arts and Crafts. She has been making photographs for more than 25 years in her Oakland studio in the Jingletown Arts District. She still shoots with film.

Emilie Watten is a recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz where she discovered photography her junior year and became enamored by it. She also shoots film on her moms old 35mm Nikon.

Jan & Emilie’s project:

In our collaboration for the Mother Tree Exhibit, Jan and Emilie will be showing images that they made when they were both 22 years old. Emilie is almost 23, and her images were taken recently.

Jan went into her archives of negatives to find images that she took when she was 22. As we began selecting work for the show we discovered how our vision was so in sync. This element of synchronicity has been a gratifying and rewarding mother/daughter experience.
