Jazz! Black America’s Classical Music

Available through November 12th.

Blending the sounds of harp, drums and upright bass, The Destiny Muhammad Trio performs a set of original jazz compositions by Destiny Muhammad. The harp takes the lead in this unique jazz combo by creating beautifully distinctive melody lines. Exploring techniques of soloing and improvisation, the members of the trio support each other using communication, teamwork and gratitude.

ART CHANGES: Visual Arts with AEF

Art Changes, presented by the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF), provides short videos of local artists from diverse backgrounds demonstrating their art-making process and talking about their values and inspiration. These artist profile videos are followed by a student art activity video inspired by both the performance and the artist profile. Art projects are designed using simple materials, encouraging participation by all students.

In the first video, photographer Darius Riley stresses the importance of listening to and making connections with the people he photographs. In the second video, Darius takes us on a journey around Oakland’s Lake Merritt where he uses the Rule of Thirds to photograph landscapes. In the art project video, students use the Rule of Thirds for drawing their own landscapes.
