Duniya Dance & Drum Company

West African Dance and Drum

Available through April 30th.

Duniya Dance and Drum Company creates dance and music from Punjab, India, and Guinea, West Africa, as well as unique blends of these forms and beyond. The word duniya means “world” in several languages including Punjabi, Arabic, Susu and Wolof. Duniya’s work embodies this word, as it explores the forces that have brought together the members of the company and their dance and drum styles, including, but not limited to, colonization, globalization, immigration, art, dance, music and love.

Today’s performance introduces drumming and dance from Guinea, West Africa. Students will learn about West African instruments, history and a few dance moves!

ART CHANGES: Visual Arts with AEF

Art Changes, presented by the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF), provides short videos of local artists from diverse backgrounds demonstrating their art-making process and talking about their values and inspiration. These artist profile videos are followed by a student art activity video inspired by both the performance and the artist profile. Art projects are designed using simple materials, encouraging participation by all students.

Art teacher, Constance Moore, is a children’s book illustrator. Her drawings make the written word come alive. In her first book, Brown: The Many Shades of Love, watercolor adds warmth to every face. In Black: The Many Wonders of My World, a young girl’s surroundings are filled with curving lines and geometric shapes. The art project video lets students create book cover art using markers to imitate watercolor brush strokes. With a simple title and abstract designs, it’s easy to make a colorful book cover that really is a work of art!
