ONE Planet, ONE World, ONE People

A Black History Musical Celebration

Available through February 28th.

SoVoSó (from the Soul to the Voice to the Song) demonstrates their imaginative a capella “voices only” music-making while celebrating Black History in this dynamic and inspirational assembly. Presenting musical styles of a global perspective, SoVoSó leads students in an exploration of vocal percussion and call-and-response singing while learning about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, migration, and the Civil Rights Movement. Students will sing about the heroes who helped fight for freedom and equality and discover that we are all ONE Planet, ONE World, ONE People.

ART CHANGES: Visual Arts with AEF

Art Changes, presented by the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF), provides short videos of local artists from diverse backgrounds demonstrating their art-making process and talking about their values and inspiration. These artist profile videos are followed by a student art activity video inspired by both the performance and the artist profile. Art projects are designed using simple materials, encouraging participation by all students.

Derrick Bell’s Dent de Lion series (French for dandelion) lets viewers celebrate our differences by turning faces into beautiful flowers. As an art teacher, Derrick Bell is a natural as he paints a portrait similar to his work: African Daisies: Kings Wear Hoodies.

In the art project video students will learn how to draw a portrait filled with daisies and African violets (both are featured in the artist video) as well as roses and tulips. Colored pencils work best, but crayons or markers can be used as well.
